The Kemerovo region is a part of Siberian Federal District occupying the territory of southeast part of Western Siberia. The region shares the common borders with Krasnoyarsk and Altai Krai, Altai Republic and Khakassia, as well as Tomsk and Novosibirsk regions.
Administratively Kemerovo region consists of 18 municipal districts and numbers 20 cities. Seven of them have population over 100 thousand inhabitants. These are the cities - Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Prokopyevsk, Belovo, Kiselevsk, Leninsk-Kuznetsky, Mezhdurechensk.
The population of the region numbers 2 734 075 (2014). This region is recognized to be the most heavily populated in Siberia. The most part of the population is concentrated in cities.
The largest city of Novokuznetsk region is Novokuznetsk. Novokuznetsk as well as nearest to it cities, form Novokuznetsk agglomeration which is the 13th most populous in Russia (more than 1,3 million people).
The regional center is the city of Kemerovo.
There are a large number of architectural monuments, as well as monuments of culture and history (among them – the monuments of federal significance) in Kemerovo region.
The nature of this region is beautiful and unique. There are plants and rare species of animals listed in Red-Book here. The territory of Kuznetsk Alatau Nature Reserve is under protection. The Shorsky National Park is also open to the public.
Kemerovo region has a large amount of extractable resources; there are large collieries and mining industry plants.
